KWHL is a teaching technique used to introduce units of study by
helping students organize, plan and gather information. KWHL charts—
also known as what I know charts, KWL charts, and know-wonder-learn
charts—help students research and strategize effective ways to gain
knowledge before and after new topics have been taught. Regardless of
the name, the letters represent similar ideas:
K: What you know about the topic
W
: What you want to know about the topic
H: How you will learn what you want to know
L: What you learned about the topic
Applicable to any subject or lesson, a KWHL chart should be used
before, during, and after students study a new topic. Completing this
chart prepares students for studying and reviewing a topic, obtaining
