MAINTENANCE
ENGINE AND ENGINE PARTS
We recommend that you see an authorized Briggs & Stratton Service Dealer for all maintenance and service of the engine
and engine parts. Use only genuine Briggs & Stratton parts.
If you perform any maintenance on the engine, first disconnect the
spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent unintentional sparking.
Unintentional sparking can result in fire or electric shock. Unintentional
start-up can result in entanglement, traumatic amputation or laceration.
Use only correct tools.
WARNING
WARNING
Do not strike the flywheel with a hammer or hard object because the flywheel may
later shatter during operation.
Do not tamper with links or other parts to increase engine speed.
FOAM AIR FILTER
AIR FILTER
Check and clean the intake chamber for dirt. If the foam
air filter is dirty and worn, replace with clean filter.
CAUTION: Do not use pressurized air or solvents
to clean filter. Pressurized air can damage filter;
solvents will dissolve filter.
Foam Air Filter
To clean, wash in liquid detergent and water. Squeeze dry
in a clean cloth. Allow to dry thoroughly. Dip foam air filter
in clean engine oil, then squeeze out excess oil in clean
cloth. Engine will smoke if too much oil is left on filter.
COVER TAB
Push cover tab to
release cover, then
pull cover away
from engine to ser-
vice air filter.
WARNING
Replacement parts for fuel
system (cap, hoses, tanks,
filters, etc.) must be the same
as original parts, otherwise
fire can occur.
SPARK PLUG
Use only Briggs & Stratton Spark Tester (part
number 19368) to check for spark.
Note: In some areas, local
law requires using resistor
spark plug to suppress
ignition signals. If this en-
gine was originally
equipped with resistor
spark plug, use same type
for replacement.

PART NO 696876
Engine parts should be kept clean to reduce the risk
of overheating and ignition of accumulated debris.
This is especially important if cutting tall grass. Daily
or before every use, clean accumulated debris from
engine.
WARNING
CAUTION: Do not use water to clean engine parts.
Water could contaminate fuel system. Use a brush
or dry cloth.
