Electric Starter S ystem
•
Set ohmmeter to R × 1 Ω range.
•
Connect meter leads to starter relay as shown.
•
Activate starter relay switch by connecting a 12 V battery
as shown.
If the starter relay switch clicks and the ohmmeter indi-
cates zero resistance, the starter relay switch i s good.
If the meter indicates high or infinite (∞) resistance, the
starter relay switch is defective and must be replaced.
Starter Motor Removal

Remove:
Seat (see Hull/Engine Hood chapter)
Inlet Manifold (see Fuel System chapter)
•
Side out the rubber caps [A] and remove the terminal nuts.
•
Remove the mounting bolts [A].
•
Pull out the starter motor [B].
Starter Motor Installation
CAUTION
Do not tap the starter motor shaft or body. Tapping
the shaft or body could damage the motor.
•
When installing the starter motor, clean the starter mo-
tor legs [A] and crankcase [B] where the starter motor is
grounded.
•
Apply grease to the O-rings [A].
•
Install the starter motor and tighten the mounting bolts.
Torque - Starter Motor Mounting Bolts: 8.8 N·m (0.90 kgf·m,
78 in·lb)
